Watch: Actor Will Smith and Chris Rock on Oscars stage
At the Oscars, Will Smith slapped Chris Rock in the face after the comedian made a joke about the actor’s wife Jada Pinkett Smith.
“Can’t wait for GI Jane 2,” he said, referring to her shaved hairstyle, which is a result of the hair loss condition alopecia.
“Keep my wife’s name out of your [expletive] mouth,” Smith said as he walked on stage and struck Rock. Smith then returned to his seat and yelled.
He later apologised to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
He also expressed regret to all of his fellow nominees in a tearful acceptance speech for best actor. Rock did not receive a formal apology.
For his role as the father of tennis legends Venus and Serena Williams in King Richard, the actor received his first Academy Award nomination.
He explained that “art imitates life.” “Just as they said about Richard Williams, I appear to be the insane father. Love, on the other hand, will drive you crazy.”
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which oversees the Oscars, issued a statement saying it “does not condone violence in any form.”
Rock’s joke was a reference to Demi Moore’s performance in the 1997 film GI Jane, in which she wore a buzzcut.
Smith appeared to laugh and clap his hands before walking up to Rock on stage. Pinkett Smith rolled her eyes at the remark, while Smith appeared to laugh and clap his hands at first.
