Following the broadcast of his interview with journalist Ameer Abbas for Bol News, televangelist Maulana Tariq Jameel has come under heavy fire.
Jameel contrasted Muawiyah bin Yazid’s rejection of taking over after his father passed away, citing the tragedy at Karbala, with what he claimed to be modern Pakistani politicians’ unabashed avarice for power. He claimed that Muawiyah bin Yazid rejected the Umayyad throne due to the fact that the Ahle Bayt’s blood had stained it.
He listed the alleged flaws in Pakistani politicians, claiming that their avarice for power caused them to hold on to it at all costs. He stated his patriotism had left him with no choice but to speak, despite acknowledging that the Tableeghi Jamaat tended to stay out of politics.
After the successful vote of no confidence against the then-prime minister Imran Khan, the televangelist claimed that horse trading to put together a ridiculous government was an example of this. Politicians in Pakistan, he implied, had destroyed the country for a few pennies. Although Pakistan had produced many notable people, Jameel insisted that he still hoped for the day when the country would be home to just one politician who would stop trading his soul for power.
Naturally, the interview triggered a hornet’s nest. Shah Owais Noorani of the Jamiat-e-Ulema Pakistan posted on Twitter, comparing Jameel to fitna (affliction).
