Police attitude

According to the police, Imran Riaz Khan was the subject of an Attock first information report (FIR). The journalist has been charged in numerous cases that, in his words, were brought against him because he wouldn’t “stop speaking the truth.”

Former FIRs

FIRs were filed against journalists in a number of cities, including Muzzafargarh and Sargodha. The allegations state that the anchor’s actions violated the Constitution and constituted a serious crime because they hurt the feelings of Pakistani citizens.

Controversy

The day before his arrest, Riaz posted a video to YouTube in which he criticised the Shehbaz Sharif-led administration. According to The Dawn news outlet, in the video, Riaz “directly addressed Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa and alleged that he was threatened after asking questions from military sources about the country’s current political and economic situation.” Riaz also mentioned that his family has received threats.

Condemnation

Imran Khan, the chairman of the PTI, Fawad Chaudhry, Asad Umar, Shahbaz Gill, and others raised their voices in defence of the journalist and denounced the arrest after it had already taken place.

Imran Khan, a former prime minister, strongly denounced the “arbitrary arrest” and urged the populace and media to “stand up against this fascism” in a statement.

Asad Umar, the leader of the PTI, announced that PTI party members would protest at press clubs across the nation against what he called a “attempt to suppress freedom of expression.”

Dismissed plea

Imran Riaz Khan, a senior journalist, filed a petition against his detention, but the Islamabad High Court dismissed it after determining that it was outside of its purview.

After Khan was taken into custody, his legal counsel requested that IHC open a case of police misconduct. IHC Chief Justice Athar Minallah served notices to the commissioner and chief commissioner of Islamabad police in a late-night action.

In today’s hearing, Imran Riaz Khan’s attorney claimed that his client was taken into custody from the Islamabad Toll Plaza. The chief justice stated that the case was outside of the IHC’s purview because the arrest had been made in Attock and advised the attorney to file a case with the Lahore High Court.

Are journalists in Pakistan safe?

On similar ideological grounds regarding free speech, journalists and activists both make statements like this. One of the world’s most dangerous countries for journalists is Pakistan, according to David Griffiths, Amnesty International’s (AI) deputy Asia Pacific director.

During the time from the return to democratic rule in Pakistan in 2008 to April 2014, according to a report published last year by AI, 34 cases of journalists were killed.
