Shehla Khan, Amjad’s wife, recalled the incident that occurred prior to the filming of “The Great Gambler” (released in the year 1979). Amitabh Bachchan inscribed hospital papers for doctors to perform a tracheostomy on Amjad, who required a surgical procedure called a tracheostomy (a surgical procedure to facilitate breathing).
She said the accident happened in Sawantwadi, near Goa, when she was six months pregnant, and it was a very serious accident. Amjad was suffocating for air and bleeding internally due to 13 broken ribs and a broken femur while she was still dealing with the accident. He was “more concerned” about her and the loss of the child, despite his worsening condition.

“A mob gathered outside the hospital in Sawantwadi,” Shehla said to the media outlet. “Bring Gabbar Singh outside,” the crowd kept chanting. “Amitji and Amjad are very close to one another,” she went on to say. No one knows if this person will survive, so Amitji must be concerned. Amjad was taken aback when he scribbled “tracheostomy” on a scrap of paper. If he would obey her, he asked Amit Ji. In fact, he could spell complex words correctly even when he was in the state. We booked a flight to Mumbai not long after that. We were in Nanavati Hospital for about three months.”
