Attacks on Christian Colony and Churches in Faisalabad by Charged Crowds

Around 7,000 TLP activists stormed a local Christian colony in the Jaranwala neighbourhood of Faisalabad on Wednesday morning and ransacked a number of churches over what they claimed was blasphemy allegedly committed by a local resident.

As armed mobs prowled the streets following the attack, the neighbourhood was gripped by fear and panic. The local market was shut down.

Videos and social media posts from locals indicated that the public was incited by mosque loudspeakers in response to rumours that two local Christians, going by the names Rocky and Raja, had allegedly desecrated religious texts.

They have arrived in Jaranwala, IGP and Chief Secretary. The law and order situation is now under control and is being managed by 6,500 police officers. The charged crowds attacked the colony as a large police presence moved in and assured the gathering crowd that the suspects would be caught and dealt with in accordance with the law.

Local Christians seemed to have left the area for fear of being attacked. Families from at least 500 homes in three Christian settlements, according to a local Christian resident, have fled their homes.

In addition to ransacking another local church and neighbouring buildings, the mob also reportedly set fire to the Salvation Army Church in the colony, one of the oldest churches in the region.

The street was filled with piled-up furniture from the buildings that had been set on fire. Some Christian activists claimed that some of the colony’s homes had also been set on fire.

There were, however, no reports of any deaths.

Along with calling for the perpetrator’s execution, local mobs shouted slogans in support of the Tehreek-e-Labbaik, Khatam-e-Nabuwat. Later, the mobs gathered at Mehtab Masjid, which is close to Cinema Chowk.

The situation, according to the locals, would not have gotten out of control if police had intervened sooner.

Anchor Response over the Charged Crowds Attack Faisalabad Churches

Murtaza Solangi

This morning a couple of miscreants put a couple of pages of holy Quran and put obnoxious words on them and put them outside the mosque in #Jaranwala in an attempt to incite violence against the Christian community. A sectarian outfit used it to politicise it and use it for violence against the Christian community. The mob has damaged one Church but the paramilitary Rangers has been called and efforts are being made to bring the situation to normalcy.

I am left utterly speechless to witness the distressing scenes emerging from Jaranwala. The act of vandalism on the church is an abhorrent & sorrowful incident & a stark contradiction to the principles symbolized by the white portion of our flag. I strongly urge the authorities to take immediate and decisive action against the responsible.
