Coronavirus can survive for up to Four hours on copper, up to three days on plastic, stainless steel and for a day on cardboard, study says.

The COVID-19 disease can survive on some surfaces for days or in the air for several hours, a study reveals

A research published in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) states that SARS-CoV-2 was detectable for up to 4 hours on copper and 2 to three 3 days on plastic and stainless steel, and up to 24 hours on cardboard.


Some studies including Sars and Mers, found that the virus can survive on metal, glass and plastic for as long as nine days, unless they are properly sanitized or disinfected. Some can even survive for up to 28 days in low temperatures
US National Institutes of Health (NIH) found that that the virus could survive in droplets for up to 3 hours after being coughed out into the air. Just like many other respiratory viruses, including flu, Covid-19 can also spread in tiny droplets released from the nose and mouth while sneezing of an infected person. A single cough can produce up to 3,000 droplets. These particles can land on other people, surfaces and clothing around them, while some of the smaller particles can remain in the air.

Scientists from the US-based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), University of California, Los Angeles and Princeton used a nebuliser to simulate a person coughing or sneezing, found that the particles became suspended in the air, making it detectable for almost three hours.

The virus is transmitted by respiratory droplets and in this form it is viable for few seconds after a person coughs or sneezes.

Therefore it is evident that the novel coronavirus can be transmitted via a variety of routes
