According to state police, popular author Salman Rushdie was injured on Friday before a scheduled speech in western New York. Rushdie has long endured threats to his life from fanatics.
According to a declaration from New York State Police Maj. Eugene J. Staniszewski, a man stormed the stage at the Chautauqua Institution, about 70 miles south of Buffalo, at around 11 a.m. and attacked Rushdie and a questioner.
Rushdie, who had a clear-cut injury to his neck, was transported by helicopter to a nearby emergency clinic. The statement reads, “His condition is not yet known.
Authorities reported that the person being questioned had a minor head injury.
The suspect was quickly taken into custody by a state officer assigned to the situation. No one called out his name.
