Princess Diana’s tumultuous marriage to Prince Charles sparked rumours that the couple was forced to marry.
The accusations were fuelled by the couple’s swift courtship, which saw them get engaged after just 12 dates.
Ingrid Seward, a royal poet, asked the princess if the marriage was planned in a Reader’s Digest interview in 2001.
“I once asked Diana whether her marriage had been arranged, and she told me with some irritation: ‘It was Charles and I who decided on the marriage.’
“Not the Queen. Us. No one else.”
It was believed that senior members of the royal family expected Charles to propose to Diana as soon as he started dating her.
The royal family wanted Diana to marry Charles because she came from an aristocratic family with close connections to the royal family.
According to reports, Prince Philip ordered Charles to “propose to her or release her”
